2017 – 2020 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost Support Now Available

COBB is excited to announce that support for the F-150 EcoBoost platform now covers the 2017-2020 Ford F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L!  COBB has plenty of experience with this specific drivetrain as it is similar to what comes in the Gen 2 Raptor.  This is a very capable platform in a stock configuration, but after some COBB magic, the 3.5L F-150 becomes a whole new beast!

Whether you’re taking your 3.5L F-150 to the backcountry, cruising the streets, or hauling a trailer, the COBB Tuning Accessport offers performance gains that improve your truck for any situation.  And it doesn’t stop there.  Aside from being able to tune your F-150s Engine Control Unit (ECU) and Transmission Control Unit (TCM) anywhere with preloaded off the shelf maps, COBB also offers a range of bolt-on hard parts that will help reach nearly any goal.  For those with custom setups and extreme power demands, COBB has a vast network of Protuners that can create custom tunes with our Accesstuner Software that can accommodate any setup!

What is an Accessport?

The Accessport is the world’s best selling, most flexible, and easiest to use ECU tuning solution for your 2017-2020 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost.   The Accessport is the key to tuning your F-150.  With options to change both engine and transmission calibrations, completely customizing your driving experience is in the palm of your hand.  It allows you to increase power by replacing conservative factory settings with more aggressive calibrations, and more!  The Accessport is in-cabin mountable and has a large, full color, high-resolution screen which allows you to monitor up to six parameters in real time.  It is fully customizable from the look (multiple bezel colors), layout (set up race, street, or dyno gauge clusters), and mounting options (choose from 1,000s of standard vehicle mounts).

Power gains, map availability, and features are uniform throughout the 2017-2020 model year 3.5L F-150.  However, starting in 2020, Ford combines the ECU and TCM into one unit.  Because of this, the only option is collective ECU and TCM support onto the same Accessport for the 2020 model year.  For vehicles from 2017 – 2019 the ECU and TCM are separate.  The option to have only ECU support or an Accessport capable of both ECU and TCM flashing is available.  If you want to purchase an ECU only Accessport initially for the 2017 – 2019 F-150, you can always add TCM tuning functionality down the line with our TCM-Update option.

Off The Shelf Maps

The COBB Accessport easily installs in minutes and comes pre-loaded with several options for Off The Shelf engine (ECU) and transmission (TCM) maps.  These maps cover varying octane fuels and offer performance gains for trucks ranging from stock to full bolt-ons.  If you want more advanced modifications outside the normal upgrade path, there is a large network of Protuners that can use the Accessport and Accesstuner Pro software to create a custom tune for any modification level.  Whether you decide to follow our staged upgrade path with pre-loaded Off The Shelf (OTS) maps or use custom mapping for an advanced build, the Accessport is the only engine management solution you’ll ever need.

TCM Maps

Transmission Control Module (TCM) maps manipulate the workings of the transmission.  The goal of these maps is to improve transmission behavior overall.  Improve can mean various things depending on your goals.  With that in mind, there are three off the shelf TCM maps to choose from: Simulated Stock, OEM+, and Sport.  For the 2017 – 2019 3.5L F-150, these maps can be gained by adding TCM Flashing to your existing Accessport or buying an Accessport with TCM Flashing.  For the 2020 model year 3.5L F-150, these are included.

SIMULATED STOCK

The simulated stock maps are a replica of the factory TCM data for the 2017 – 2020 F-150 3.5L

COBB OEM+

OEMAx

The COBB OEM+ map is intended to be a sporty but refined improvement on the stock transmission behavior.

  • Shift Points: Details shown to the left (click to enlarge).
  • Shift Firmness: moderately increased shift firmness during high-power, high-RPM shifts in ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’ drive modes.
  • Upshift Backout: upshift inhibit (zero APP gear-holding) in ‘Sport’ mode following high-power acceleration and throttle backout has been disabled. Stock behavior would inhibit upshift until pedal position is re-applied above ~10%.  Instead of this holding the gear and maintaining a high RPM, an upshift will occur for a smoother driving experience.
  • Torque Limits: increased torque limits for more aggressive launches and acceleration.

COBB SPORT

Sportup

The COBB Sport map is intended to be a performance-first improvement on the stock transmission behavior.

  • Shift Points: Details shown to the left (click to enlarge).
  • Shift Firmness: increased shift firmness during moderate to high-power shifts in ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’ drive modes.
COMPARISON

The factory ECU uses transmission Output Shaft Speed (OSS) for shift schedule tables along with Accelerator Pedal Position (APP).  The graphs above translate the OSS to vehicle speed (assuming stock tire size and diff. gearing) and show the shift schedules based on APP (x-axis) and Vehicle Speed (y-axis).  This allows you to see how shifting behavior operates at a given vehicle speed and throttle input.

Note – plots showing vehicle speed may not align with the shifting behavior of your truck due to differences in available factory final drive ratios or variances in tire sizes. The greatest takeaway from the schedule graphs above are the changes in upshifts.  Shift points are moderately increased for sportier acceleration with the COBB OEM+ map and further increased with the COBB Sport map.  The window for skip shifts is also narrower between for the OEM+ map compared to the Stock map.  For the COBB Sport map, skip shifts are eliminated except for 1 > 3 shifts in low speed and light throttle situations.  There are also more responsive downshift schedules and more anticipatory coastdown (off-power) shift schedules.  This allows smoother driving experience in off throttle situations and when slowing to a stop.

All COBB F-150 TCM maps are built for a stock 10R80 with a stock converter and clutch packs.

Tuning is not a replacement for maintenance.  Make sure to follow recommended service procedure intervals.

COBB Custom Features

Aside from the increased performance of the Off The Shelf maps or custom tune, the Accessport has more to offer.  It can be used to read and clear codes, datalog, and measure performance.  There are also several COBB Custom Features included for the 3.5L F-150 platform.

Auto Start-Stop Adjustment

A common complaint with the F-150 was the bothersome auto start/stop setting.  From the factory, there is no easy way to turn it off and keep it off with subsequent key cycles.  The Accessport’s Auto Start-Stop Adjustment feature accomplishes just that!  With this feature, you can set enable/disable Auto Start-Stop and the setting will be retained even after the vehicle is turned off.  To use this feature go to “Tune” > “Adjustments” > “Auto Start-Stop” > and then select “1” if you want it to be enabled or “0” to disable it as shown below.

image (5) image (4) image (3) image (2) image (1)
Fuel Pump Control

You guessed it!  This feature allows control of the in-tank fuel pump.  This is especially useful if you want to drain the fuel tank to run different fuels, depressurize the fuel system to change injectors, or are needing to drain the fuel tank for any other reason.  To use this feature (see Accessport steps below), with the engine running set the Fuel Pump Control State to -1.  This will turn off the fuel pump and the engine will shut down when the ECU has detected behavior consistent with fuel pressure loss.  At this point, fuel pressure will be low enough to disconnect the fuel line and route it into a container.  Keying ON and setting the Fuel Pump Control State to back to 1 will turn the fuel pump back on which would then drain the fuel tank.

image (5) image (4) image (7) image (6)

Dynamic Pedal Control

This feature is intended to enhance or dull accelerator pedal response.  You can set this value from -5 to 10, with 0 being factory response for whichever Drive Mode the truck is in.  Each reduction from 0 to -5 will decrease pedal response by 20%.  This could be useful if you’re wanting to limit power or fuel consumption. Each increment from 0 to 10 will increase your pedal response by 10%.  This will make the truck feel faster since the actual throttle will open more with less pedal input.  Below is a graphical representation comparing throttle pedal input (x-axis) with the amount the throttle body is opening (y-axis) for each setting.

Raptor Throttle Tables

To access this feature, select Throttle Response from the Adjustments menu as shown below.  The value saved will remain until it is changed through this menu again.  It is persistent through key-cycles and ECU flashes.  This feature is disabled in the Stage 0 (Stock) map file and will default to 3 in standard COBB Off The Shelf Maps.

image (5) image (4) image (10) image (9) image (8)

Valet Mode

Valet Mode can be used to reduce maximum power output by limiting throttle to about 25%.  A value of 1 will enable valet mode.  A value of 0 will return to normal.  This setting will be retained even through key cycles and does not require changing maps!  Below shows how to adjust Valet Mode on the Accessport.

  1. Hey Ford Team! PLEASE add the “normal” Ford Cobb custom features like 5-way map switching, etc. I have a Raptor 3.5 without them and it’s really a bummer not to have them. I also have a FocusRS and FiestaST WITH the Cobb Custom Features, so I’m really wanting them for my Raptor…
