Firmware Engineer

Help us to develop a diverse electronics product ecosystem by working closely with Development Teams consisting of: hardware, firmware, reverse, and mechanical engineers; all in a small office in Austin, Texas. We are looking for someone who is motivated to work up and down the embedded stack from hardware drivers to cloud communications.

  • Develop and maintain electronics products (e.g., firmware, drivers, boards, cables, test fixtures)
  • Create and oversee manufacturing tools and processes
  • Identify product issues or improvements
  • Follow COBB Tuning’s best engineering practices throughout development
  • Maintain resource knowledge base
  • Gather stakeholder input and/or feedback


  • Familiar with bare metal, operating system, and/or driver development
  • Experience with one or more communication layers (g.,SPI, I2C, UART, CAN-bus, BLE)
  • Functional understanding of procedural and event driven programming
  • Exposure to board bring-up
  • Able to read schematics and hardware datasheets
  • Comfortable debugging embedded systems
  • Broad understanding of software development and product life cycles
  • Three or more years of applicable experience
  • Delivers constructive feedback regarding issues, interactions, and development direction
  • Makes timely and sound decisions
  • Manages time efficiently and autonomously
  • Can write and speak effectively
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • A willingness to adapt to changing priorities with enthusiasm
  • Able to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines


  • In-depth knowledge of COBB Tuning technologies and product lines
  • In-depth knowledge of POSIX OS/driver development
  • In-depth knowledge of software development and product life cycles; understanding the tradeoffs between risks and schedules, cost and quality
  • Proficient in one or more programming languages (C/C++ recommended)
  • Experience with networking protocols (g., TCP/IP, WiFi, Bluetooth)
  • Experience with microprocessor IDEs and SDKs (g., NXP MCUXpresso)
  • Experience with build processes and/or automation (g., CMake)
  • Experience with emulators or simulators – anything to reduce development-testing iteration time
  • Experience with UI/UX development frameworks
  • Experience with Agile development
  • Experience working directly with customers on issues


  • Occasionally required to lift or move weights up to 75 lbs
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts and vehicles
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals
  • Protective clothing or equipment is required that may include gloves, helmets, steel-toed boots, protective eyewear, and/or ear protection
