Buying a Used Accessport

AP3-SUB_gallery_01

Most of us would probably have a 10 second (or faster?) car if we could.  Most of us also have the same hurdle when it comes to reaching that or any other car goal that requires modifications.  It usually comes down to money.  In an effort to stretch the car budget a little further, it’s common to check out the used market.  With hard parts, it’s pretty straight forward.  However, with an Accessport, it’s not uncommon to see people that were trying to save a buck end up spending a lot more than they should have.  The following is a basic guide that includes the things to consider when buying a used Accessport.

Accessories

The Accessport should at least include the cable that connects to your OBD2 port.  If not, this would have to be purchased separately.  The cable that connects to your computer would also be a plus if included but it’s not a proprietary cable.  It can easily be replaced with any micro USB > USB cable.  Other accessories include the start guide, different faceplates, a protective case, and a dashmount and holster.  Although these aren’t necessary for the Accessport to operate,  definitely consider the purchase price If several of these accessories (especially the OBD2 cable) are missing.

Part Number

A more important thing to consider is the Accessport’s part number.  Each Accessport is only compatible with certain vehicles.  With many platforms, it can even be specific vehicles through specific model year ranges.  Luckily, it’s pretty easy to determine which Accessport part number you need.  Simply visit cobbtuning.com and configure your vehicle at the top of the page and click “view products.”  You will then see all compatible parts.  The Accessport will be on this main page and have its part number listed (it starts with “AP3”).

Once you know what part number you need, pry up on the faceplate of the Accessport you’re considering buying and make sure it corresponds to your part number.  The part number pictured below starts with SUB03 so we know this is an AP3-SUB-003 part number Accessport.

20150106_124153

You can also check the part number if you are able to power on the Accessport with a car’s OBD port or any computer.

Note Two Exceptions to the Accessport Part Number Shown Above:

1 – Accessport Activates or “APA”s.  If the serial number shown above starts with APA, it means the Accessport was programmed as it was sold by a dealer.  You’ll have to use a below method to determine compatibility.

2 – Accessport V3s are able to be reprogrammed to a different part number.  This is far less common but is something to be conscious of.  We’d recommend going one of the below routes to make sure the Accessport is the same number is started life as.

Computer Only

First, download and install Accessport Manager.  Then, plug the Accessport into the computer via the micro USB > USB cable.  You can then open Accessport Manager and view the manage tab shown here (this also shows the installed state mentioned below):

SNphoto

Car/Computer

If no computer is handy, and you’re not able to get the faceplate off, you can also check the part number (and installed state) by powering the Accessport on with any vehicle’s OBD2 port.  Then, scroll through the “Help” > “About Accessport” > this section will show the Installed State (a “?” will be shown if it is not installed to any vehicle) and the Serial Number.

screenshot1 screenshot2 screenshot3

Installed State

The installed state is just as important as whether or not the Accessport is the correct part number.  If it is already installed (or “married”) to another vehicle, it will not work on your vehicle.  The installed state can be checked by plugging the Accessport into any car (any car with an OBD2 port, compatibility for this step is not required) or computer and completing the steps above or with a quick scroll through the main menu.  If “Install” is an option, this Accessport is ready to work on another compatible vehicle.  If “Uninstall” is an option, this Accessport will not work on your vehicle until it is uninstalled from the previous vehicle or sent to COBB to be re-licensed.

GOOD: Ready to be used on your car! BAD: Still installed to another car.
v3-install v3-uninstall

There is no way to determine 100% the Installed State without being in person.  Sadly, we have seen situations where sellers take pictures of the “Install” option and then install the Accessport prior to selling it.  We recommend to protect yourself by confirming the installed state in person or, at the very least, feel the seller out.  Check for references or mentions of previous transactions to determine if you’re willing to trust this person to be honest about the Installed State of the Accessport.  This is typically readily available on forums or Ebay which may be a better alternative to craigslist.

The Potential Costs of Purchasing Used

COBB is able to change the part number of your Accessport.  This service is $150 plus any positive difference in the cost of the part number you’re changing to.  This isn’t the only cost to consider when buying used.

If an Accessport was never uninstalled from a previous vehicle, it can be re-licensed, or set to an uninstalled state. The Accessport is essentially 2 parts: the hardware to flash the vehicle and the tuning license that is installed on the car. Therefore, in cases like this when the tuning license is still being used on another vehicle, COBB can re-license the Accessport for 70% of the price of a brand new Accessport of that part number.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples of purchasing used Accessports:

Uninstalled:

Jared owns a 2013 WRX.  He needs an AP3-SUB-003 ($725 new).

He buys an uninstalled AP3-SUB-003 ($725 new).

  • Is it installed and need a relicense?
    • No, it was uninstalled properly.
  • Does the part number need to be changed?
    • No, the part number is correct.
  • Is it changing to a more expensive part number?
    • No, the part number is correct.

Since the Accessport is uninstalled and the correct part number he can simply install the Accessport and go!

Installed:

Nick owns a 2017 Focus ST.  He needs an AP3-FOR-001 (total cost new is $625).

He buys an Installed Accessport (AP3-FOR-001) from a 2015 Focus ST (total cost new is $625).

Since the Accessport is Installed he will have the following costs:

  • Is it installed and need a relicense?
    • Yes, it is in need of a relicense. In this case, $437.50 to relicense the Ford AP.
  • Does the part number need to be changed?
    • No, the part number is correct.
  • Is it changing to a more expensive part number?
    • No, the part number is correct.

Uninstalled AND Wrong Part Number To Less Expensive AP:

Jon owns a 2015 Subaru WRX. He needs AP3-SUB-004 ($725 new).

He buys an uninstalled Accessport (AP3-NIS-007) from a 2016 Nissan GT-R (total cost new is $975).

Since the Accessport is Uninstalled and the Incorrect part number he will have the following costs:

  • Is it installed and need a relicense?
    • No, it was uninstalled properly.
  • Does the part number need to be changed?
    • Yes, a change to the part number for his vehicle which will cost the flat $150 fee.
  • Is it changing to a more expensive part number?
    • Pay any positive difference in cost between the software. In this case, the GT-R is $975 and the Subaru is $725. Since it’s less expensive there is no difference to pay.

Installed AND Wrong Part Number To Less Expensive AP:

Matt owns a 2015 EVO X. He needs AP3-MIT-002 ($525 new).

He buys an Installed Accessport (AP3-NIS-007) from a 2016 Nissan GT-R (total cost new is $975).

Since the Accessport is Installed and the Incorrect part number he will have the following costs:

  • Is it installed and need a relicense?
    • Yes, it is in need of a relicense. In this case, $682.50 to relicense the Nissan AP.
  • Does the part number need to be changed?
    • Yes, a change to the part number for his vehicle which will cost the flat $150 fee.
  • Is it changing to a more expensive part number?
    • Pay any positive difference in cost between the software. In this case, the GT-R Accessport is $950 and the Mitsubishi Accessport is $500. Since it’s less expensive, there is no difference to pay.

Installed AND Wrong Part Number To More Expensive AP:

Marshall owns a 2010 Mazdaspeed3. He needs AP3-MAZ-002 ($675 new).

He buys an installed Accessport from a Mitsubishi Evo X (AP3-MIT-002 $525 new).  Since the Accessport is still installed to the Evo X, Mark would have the cost of the re-license (in this case $367.50) AND the cost of changing the part number ($150) AND the difference in price between the Accessports ($150).  That totals out to $667.50, or almost the price of a brand new AP3-MAZ-002 with a warranty.

Since the Accessport is Installed and the incorrect part number, Mark will have the following costs:

  • Is it installed and need a relicense?
    • Yes, it is in need of a relicense. In this case, $367.50 to relicense the Mitsubishi AP.
  • Does the part number need to be changed?
    • Yes, a change to the part number for his vehicle which will cost the flat $150 fee.
  • Is it changing to a more expensive part number?
    • Pay any positive difference in cost between the software. In this case, the Mazdaspeed3 is $675 and the Evo X $525, leaving a $150 difference.

Installed AND Wrong Part Number Same Value:

Drew owns a 2002 Subaru WRX. He needs AP3-SUB-001 ($695).

He buys an installed Accessport for a 2015 Subaru STI (AP3-SUB-004 $725 new).

Since the Accessport is Installed and the incorrect part number, Chris will have the following costs:

  • Is it installed and need a relicense?
    • Yes, it is in need of a relicense. In this case, $507.50 to relicense the Subaru AP.
  • Does the part number need to be changed?
    • Yes, a change to the part number for his vehicle which will cost the flat $150 fee
  • Is it changing to a more expensive part number?
    • Pay any positive difference in cost between the software. In this case, the SUB-004 is $30 more expensive so there would not be any additional cost.

02-05 WRX vehicles require an initialization connector to be flashed and are available for $5

What the Accessport comes with, its part number, and whether or not it was uninstalled from the previous vehicle should all be considered when buying a used Accessport.  Not all is lost if you purchase a used Accessport that is installed to another vehicle or the wrong part number.  However, paying for these remedies can quickly outweigh the savings for buying used in the first place.  Hopefully this guide can save you making an overly costly purchase.

  1. Kyle, I have purchased Accessport Stage 1 package for my 2015 Fiesta ST and haven’t installed the Accessport yet. I plan to trade-in my FiST for a 2016 Subaru WRX premium. Will i be able to use/convert my accessport to this WRX?
    Thx, ernee

    • Hey Ernesto,

We do offer the ability to change part numbers on the V3 Accessport. There is a $150 fee plus the difference in Accessport cost. Reach out to our Customer Service team at 1-866-922-3059 or [email protected] to get the process started!

      • I have a 2014 focus st got a used ap unmarried got a tune from jst and when I load it to the ap it says it’s locked to the 2015 focus st

  2. I purchased a used accessport v3 from the previous owner of my 2006 mazdaspeed6. It was already setup for my car and had been used but then Uninstalled by the previous owner in case another person wanted it. I had purchased it shortly after the vehicle. It allowed me to install and tune the vehicle with OTS maps, but the option for Uninstall is available; does that mean it is not functioning properly? Will I be able to register the accessport?

    • After you install the Accessport to your car, uninstall will be an option. It is functioning properly. You are able to register it.

  3. im looking at a v3 cobb accessport that is a sub 003 and i would want to switch it to a sub 001 how much would that cost?

    • Hi Dan,

Assuming it was uninstalled from the previous vehicle, the cost would be $150. If it wasn’t, the cost would be $450.

      Kyle@COBB

  4. I am looking at buying an ap2-sub-003 (unmarried) and would need to have it relicensed to sub-002. How much would that cost ? Thank you

    • Hi Laurent,

As the article mentions, the cost to change part numbers is $150 plus the difference in the price of the Accessport. Since those part numbers are the same cost, the cost to change the Accessport would be $150.

      Kyle@COBB

    • Hey Jake, if an Accessport is still married to another vehicle you would need to have it relicensed before it can be installed onto your car. The cost to relicense is 50% of the retail value of the Accessport, or in this case $325. Keep that in mind when considering the purchase of a used Accessport!

      Marshall@COBB

  5. If I buy a 15 sti unmarried sub 004 accessport and use it on my 16 wrx do i have to pay anything? Cause the part number is the same

    • You shouldn’t! As long as the Accessport was completely Uninstalled, or “Unmarried”, you will be able to install it onto your 2016 WRX without an issue.

      Marshall@COBB

  6. Got a accessport v3 for 991 carrera from my friend, mine is a 991 turbo, wonder how much would cost to fit my car with new PDK flashing.

    • Hey Alex, you can indeed have that Accessport re-programmed to work on your 991 Turbo! We charge $150 + difference in cost of the two Accessports. Give our Customer Service team a call at 1-866-922-3059 so we can get that process started for you.

      Marshall@COBB

    • Hi Brian,

I’m sorry you’re having issues. Keep in mind only the Imprezza WRX and STI are supported. If that’s not the problem, give us a call at 866-922-3059 and we can help you troubleshoot.

      Kyle@COBB

    • Hi Joe,

If it’s a Forester XT, then yes. However, you’ll only be able to use it on one vehicle at a time.

      Kyle@COBB

        • Joe,

You don’t HAVE to. But if you didn’t, you’d have to go through the hassle of uninstalling and reinstalling the Accessport to each vehicle every time you drive. There is no work around for having a limit of one vehicle per Accessport at a time.

          Kyle@COBB

  7. Are there any hardware revisions differences to be concerned with the older production units? What are the difference between the “Accessport” vs “Cobb” labelled units (on top front of unit)?

    • Hi Jim,

There are no major differences between the two. Very minor changes are present but nothing that affects overall functionality.

      Kyle@COBB

  8. i have a 08 wrx but the AP i have is installed to a 08 STI i wounder if i have to send it to cobb to reset???

    • Hi Prabh,

If you are able to uninstall it from the STI, it will then be able to be installed to the WRX with no issues. If not, we are able to relicense the Accessport for a cost of $325. To start this process, give us a call at 866-922-3059 or email [email protected]. Kyle@COBB

  9. Hi Guys,

I’m about to buy a used COBB access port V3. Below are the detailes:

Specification of the COBB access i will be buying:
    – v3
    – Part#: AP3-POR-007, used origianlly on a Cayman Gt4. the device has a UNINSTALLED state.

I will be using the the COBB on my 2014 Porsche Carrera Turbo. Which uses another part number AP3-POR-006.

Is the switch doable ? and how much would it cost. Thanks !

    • Hello, thanks for contacting us.
Make 100% sure it is properly Uninstalled. If it is, there will be no charge for a new license but it will need to be converted from an 007 to an 006. In order for that to happen, you will need to contact our support team and set up a service ticket. The Accessport will need to be mailed to our HQ for the conversion to take place. You will have to pay the difference in price between the 007 and 006 models. That price can vary somewhat depending on whether the unit has PDK flashing ability or not and if you want to have the PDK option on the 006. Please email [email protected] with all the information regarding your Accessport and the vehicles. They will help set up a service ticket and quote your final price.

  10. if i buy a AP3-SUB-003 unmarried and i have a 2015-2017 wrx that uses AP3-SUB-004, how much would it cost to convert it over?

  11. If i buy a used stage 1 cobb package with accessport and intake will it work for my car if the guy says he unmarried it from his car?I have 16 wrx

    • Yes, as long as the previous owner went through the complete Uninstall process you should be good to go. To verify, have him send you a screenshot of the Accessport’s “About” screen showing the Uninstalled status.

      Marshall@COBB

  12. AP Ver2 is not working well enought for me to be comfortable with and have gotten an unmarried AP3-MAZ-002. When putting my map over to it, it said this:
“The map is locked to a V2 Accessport serial number. To use V2 locked maps, you must contact Tech Support to upgrade your v3 accessport” Is there a cost for this upgrade?

    • Hi Charlie,

Send an email over to [email protected] and let them know the serial number from your V2 and the V3. They can send you an update to allow the V3 to recognize your V2 serial number so it can use those maps.

      Adam@COBB

  13. I will be trading in a 2017 WRX for a 2018 Forester XT in the next week or two. I’ve been using an AP3-SUB-004, and today I restored the factory settings on the WRX via the AP so it just displays “Install” when connected to the car. If I’m reading this post correctly, the Accessport is now “unmarried” from the WRX and could be installed in the Forester with no need to convert or re-license? Is there anything else that would need to be done to switch from “WRX mode” to “Forester mode” or would the AP automatically recognize the new vehicle and display the appropriate OTS maps? Thanks.

  14. I have a 2004 WRX. I found an access port with SUB-001. says it needs to be relicensed bc he sold his last wrx, so is that the $150?

  15. Hi i got one Accesport from my first GTR.. i havent unmarried it… can i still unmarry it? how much does this cost?!
    TY

    • Hi Daniel,

It can only be unmarried with the car it is installed on. If that’s not an option, it can be re-licensed. That cost will vary depending on which Accessport part number you have. Check out the article above for details on how to determine which part number Accessport you have. You can then search that part number to find the price. The cost to re-license the AP will be half of that cost.

  16. I have just purchased a SUB004 that is married, what is the cost to have it relicensed? And how do I have it relicensed?

  17. If I buy an Accessport married to a 2004 wrx, can I put it on a 2004 wrx? Also, does it matter if it goes from a sedan to a wagon?

    • Hi Jeremy,

You’ll have to get it relicensed even if it is going to be installed on the same model year car. The body style will not make a difference.

      Kyle@COBB

  18. Hello,
I’m looking at getting a used AP3-FOR-001, it is still married. What would I be looking at on price to use it for my 2013 Focus ST?

  19. Hi, I’ve bought an accessport, for my MY16 STI ADM and the part number is AP3-AU-SUB-004, however the serial number is SUB1400397. Is this correct? From the above post, it says that it should be starting with SUB004?

    • Hi Victor,

Looks like everything is normal. The SUB04***** serial numbers are for USDM 2015+ Subarus. ADM models have different firmware.
      Adam@COBB

  20. When I installed the accessport it downloaded my factory map. When I go to un-marry my accessport and I go to un install does it automatically download the factory map back onto the car or do I have to do the factory map download first then go to un-install so I can have a friend use it on his fiesta?

    • Hi Carl,

When you select the Uninstall option, it will automatically use the factory map as the uninstall file, you are not even given the option to choose a map. So it should be nice and easy, but let us know if you have any other questions.

      Adam@COBB

  21. I recently sold my 2007 Legacy GT and didn’t have a chance to uninstall AP (AP3-SUB-003) because it was a last minute trade (I basically moved my stuff to a new car and went on my way) If I wanted to sell it to someone else with the same year LGT what would be the cost for them to unmarry?

    • Hey Kevin, the current cost to relicense is 50% of the retail value of the Accessport. In this case, it would be $337.50 to “unmarry” that Subaru Accessport.

      Marshall@COBB

    • You can! Luckily, all supported Evo Xs use the same Accessport part number. Just make sure to update the firmware using Accessport Manager to make sure you’re all up to date.

      Marshall@COBB

  22. I have an unmarried Cobb AccessPORT V3 AP3-POR-010. What would it cost to have it work on a 2007 997.1 911 turbo?

    Thank you

    • Hi Bill! We typically charge a service fee of $150 in addition to the difference in cost of the Accessports. In this case, you would be looking at $505 to make that change. Give our Customer Service team a shout at 1-866-922-3059 or [email protected] if you’d like to get that process started.

      Marshall@COBB

    • Hi Jim,

It will not. Sorry for the bad news. We are able to reprogram it to the part number compatible with the later cars. If the Accessport is uninstalled the total cost would be $150. To start the procss give us a call at 866-922-3059 and we can help!

      Kyle@COBB

  23. Hey Kyle,
I bought a used unmarried AP3-SUB-004 accessport which was used on 2018 WRX. I own a 2019 STI. When i uploaded a 2019 map into the accessport using the accessport manager it showed me a warning that the car model in which on which the accessport was installed doesnt match even though the website says AP3-SUB-004 is compatible with all subaru models from 2015-2019. Should I be concerned?

    Thanks
    Arun

    • Hi Arun,

It sounds like the Accessport may still be installed to the previous vehicle. There is no need to download anything. Just plug it in and select install. As long as the firmware is up to date it will offer you the 2019 model year maps. The Accessport will only allow you to install the correct map specific to your ECU. If this doesn’t work or you need any help, give us a call at 866-922-3059. Here is a link to a firmware update: https://www.cobbtuning.com/support/step-by-step-firmware-update-instructions/

  24. I have an accessport I am getting rid of and need to unmarry it from the car. I currently have an APR stage 2 tune on it with out unmarring the accessport on the car. Can I unmarry the accessport from the car with out removing the APR tune?

    • Hi Nicholas,

Unfortunately, if you have a tune that has overwritten the Accessport install (which is what it sounds like) you will not be able to uninstall the Accessport.

      Kyle@COBB

  25. Hi Joei,

The cost to relicense an Accessport is 70% of what it costs new. That is $472.50 in this case.

    Kyle@COBB

  26. I bought an AP for my WRX two weeks ago and a week later I had a wreck and totaled my car. It was unable to turn on so I could not unmarry my brand new AP. What are my options. Please tell me I’m not going to have to pay another $350 to get it re-licensed.

    • Hey Benjamin, sorry to hear about the wreck! As long as you have documentation of the total loss we are able to give you a break on the relicensing fee. Shoot our Customer Service Team an email ([email protected]) or phone call (866-922-3059) and we’ll get you taken care of.

      Marshall@COBB

  27. I have AP for my 02 wrx (AP3-SUB-001) and the ej205 motor is on its last days, Im thinking of upgrading to the ej257, ECU, and harness for the full USDM STI swap. How much would it be to convert my AP3-SUB-001 to AP3-SUB-002?

  28. Good Day Kyle,

    I have got a V3 accessport that came from a BMW 13i N55
It has been ininstalled correctly. To my understanding i just need to get the part number changed to work on my 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STI ADM spec.

What would be the process for this, is it a physical change that Cobb need to make, or is it something that is done remotely. I am based in South Africa.

  29. My ’06 STi was totaled. I’d like to sell my v3 AP. I have a potential buyer lined up with a ’16 STi. What are the costs to make it work?

    • Hi Andrew,

Sorry to hear about the accident. It looks like one of our support team replied to your email today with the information needed to get started on taking care of that. Let us know if you have other questions later.
      Adam@COBB

  30. Hey, so I got a married V3 AP from a 2013 Speed3. Guy sold the gay before I got the AP. I have a 2011 Speed3. What do I need to do to make it work?

    • Hi Kevin,

As mentioned above, the cost to relicense an Accessport is 70% of the cost of the unit. The Mazdaspeed Accessport is $650. 70% of that amount is $455. You’d have to send it in to get relicensed for that amount in order for it to be installed on another compatible car.

      Kyle@COBB

  31. If I bought a used AP v.3 and it has a professional tune on it but doesn’t work to pass emissions could I go to a Stage 2 tune for emissions then switch back to the pro tune?

    • Hi Brandon,

Whether or not you can use the Stage 2 tune safely will depend on what modifications are on the car. Whether or not it will pass will also be dependent on the modifications done to the car and what issues are causing it to fail.

      Kyle@COBB

  32. Hey Kyle, I am selling my COBB APv3 for my 2014 Evo X MR. Does just uninstalling it allow the potential buyer to install it and use it or do they have to contact COBB for the $150 USD part number fix?

    • Stephen,

Uninstalling will allow the Accessport to instantly apply to any other Evo X. If the buyer has a different car, then they will need to contact support to have it converted and there will be a fee for that. The price for the conversion varies depending on what car it is for.

      Adam@COBB

  33. We have a member in our car club (Ford ST/RS) that has a Fiesta that appears to have been modded by a prior owner. He’s the 3rd owner in the list and what we can tell it may have been tuned but it came with no AP. Any telltale signs of what is on the car? Looks to have mostly stage 1 Cobb parts.

    • Hi Rob,

Good question. Unfortunately, a lot of people will be selfish and sell the car without the AP but leave parts on the car that need tuning. The easiest way to find out if it still has a flash on the ECU is to have another Accessport. If someone in the club has an AP3-FOR-001, they can uninstall from their car, then attempt to install to the Fiesta. It will give a warning if it detects a previous tune and usually give the option to overwrite. You don’t actually have to complete the install if you don’t want. If you don’t get that message, then it’s probably on an OEM flash. Either way the Accessport can overwrite it if desired. So if the person wants to get an Accessport anyway, they might as well go ahead. There isn’t much reason not to in that case.

      Adam@COBB

  34. I didn’t do the uninstall procedure correctly when trying to uninstall my AP from my car. The car was totaled and I no longer have access to it. If I am reading correctly, I only need to pay $150 to get it uninstalled so I can sell it?

    • Hi Troy,

Sorry to hear the car was totaled. Please email [email protected] and include documentation from your insurance report regarding the total loss of the vehicle and they will quote you on the exact price and service process to relicense the Accessport.

      Adam@COBB

  35. I used AP3-004 for my 2018 WRX CVT, I sold this car last week and I bought the manul tyoe. I didn’t do the uninstall procedure from my old car. What do I need to do to make it work? Thank you.

  36. I bought a used access port and the owner did not uninstall. How much would I have to pay for it to get uninstall and installed to my 2018 wrx. It is currently installed to a 2015 STI

    • Hi Steve,

According to the article above it is 70% of the cost of the price of a new Accessport. The SUB-004 Accessport is $675. 70% of that is $472.50 which would be the cost to relicense that part number Accessport. To start the process, give us a call at 866-922-3059 or email [email protected].

  37. I bought a married focus st accessport. How much will it cost to unmarry it and be able to work on my fiesta st?

    • Hi Antonio,

According to the article above it is 70% of the cost of the price of a new Accessport. The FOR-001 Accessport is $550. 70% of that is $385 which would be the cost to relicense that part number Accessport. To start the process, give us a call at 866-922-3059 or email [email protected].

  38. When shipping my access port to get it relicensed do I just send the access port or do I need to send the cable and case as well?

  39. Hey, I bought a used unmarried accessport that came out of a 2013 wrx. I own a 2017 wrx. Can I still install it on my car or do I need the accessport reset?

    • Hey Dan, unfortunately the Accessport you purchased for a 2013 WRX (SUB-003) is not the same part number that you’ll need for your 2017 WRX (SUB-004). We can reprogram that unit for you, but there will be fees involved and, depending on what you paid for that Accessport, it may be more cost effective to sell and purchase the correct part number. Give our Customer Service team a shout at 1-866-922-3059 or [email protected] and we’ll help you figure out the most effective way to get your WRX tuned!

      Marshall@COBB

  40. Hi I had my AP uninstalled from my previous WRX, SUB0311905. Am I able to use it without relicensing on my 2019 Ascent?

    • Hello,

Since it is a different ECU and engine it will not work in its current form. Please contact [email protected] to request to have the Accessport converted to the appropriate part number. There is a fee associated with that but it’s much cheaper than buying a new Accessport.

      Adam@COBB

  41. Hi, so i bought a used sub-003 v3 and ofcourse after the guy stated it was unmarried….surprise… it was married -_-. im going through paypal to get my refund AND keep the accessport because karma is a B****, how much would it cost to get it unmarried in a situation like this?
looking forward to a response, thanks

    • Hi Sani,

According to the article, it is 70% of the cost of the Accessport to be re-licensed. A SUB-003 Accessport is $675. 675 * .7 = $472.50. This would be the cost to have a SUB-003 re-licensed.

      Kyle@COBB

  42. Hi,

I purchased an unmarried state AP3-SUB-004 that came off from an 15 STI. I have a 17 WRX. I only see maps that says Stage 1 93 octane with description saying for 2015 WRX Sti. Does this mean this AP only has STI maps? How can i get 17 WRX OTS maps?

Do i have to re license it? Or i can still use this COBB for custom tunes for my 17 WRX?

    • Hi Eddy,

It sounds like the Accessport is still installed to the STI. You can confirm this using the details outlined in the installed state section above. Basically, if it does not say “Intall” on the main menu, it is still installed on another car. If that is the case, it would need to be relicensed in order to use on your WRX. The cost for a relicense on that Accessport would be $472.50.

      Kyle@COBB

  43. so if I get a sub004 that’s unmarried, what’s the cost for me to get a access port for my mk6 gti?

    • Hi Dan,

The Accessports are the same cost so you’d just pay the fee to change the part number which is $150.

      Kyle@COBB

  44. hello!

I just purchased a 2005 subaru legacy gt. the car currently has mods and im unsure if the car has a tune or not. i wanted to buy a accessport, but im unsure if it would work or not. does the ecu lock after a cobb tune? the last owner says the car never had a cobb tune done…but it’s questionable considering the mods.

    • Hi Koorosh,

No. According to the article above, the cost to relicense an Accessport is 70% of the unit cost. The cost of a SUB-004 Accessport is $675. 675 * .7 is 472.50. $472.50 would be the cost to relicense the SUB-004 Accessport.

      Kyle@COBB

  45. Hi Kyle, I was hoping to purchase a married (V2) AP-SUB-002 from a fellow enthusiast off the forums.

What would be the fee to get it relicensed? $472.50?

    • Hi David,

As it turns out, we stopped supporting the v2 a few years ago. It is no longer possible to have them repaired or relicensed. Sorry for the bad news.

      Kyle@COBB

  46. i have a married accessport for a 04 sti. How much would it be to have it unmarried and relicensed for a 2014 wrx

    • Hi Troy,

According to the article, the cost to relicense an Accessport is 70% of the cost new. The AP in question is $675. 675 * .7 = $472.50. The cost to change the part number is $150. So, 472.50 + 150 = $622.50.

      Kyle@COBB

  47. What if I purchased a car with a tune on it from a dealer, but the original owner has the Accessport and there is no way to get in touch with them?

    • Hey Jason, in that case you would need a new Accessport and would have to overwrite the tune that is currently on the ECU in order to install.

      Marshall@COBB

  48. When did the writing on front top of accessPort change from “accessPort” to “cobb”? I see a-lot of different labeling and dont want to purchase something that might be the wrong item

    • Hi Tim,

It will vary by platform. Those are the only two different labels. We haven’t seen any fakes out there.

      Kyle@COBB

  49. I have a COBB Accessport I bought at Mountune and was used for my 2016 Focus ST. What would it cost to have it relicensed for my 2015 Evo X?

    • Hi Mark,

Assuming it was uninstalled, the cost would be $150. If it is still installed to the Ford, it would be more than the cost of a new AP for the Evo.

      Kyle@COBB

  50. I purchased an unmarried, non installed unit that’s for an ecoboost for-003 and I own a 2017 fiesta st so I need the unit to be configured to for-001. How would I go about doing that and what are the associated costs?

  51. I have a used accessport, it married to another ecu. Is there a way to unmarry it without the car, so i can use it for my 2016 fiesta st

    • Hi Raymond,

Yes. You would have to send it in and pay to have it unmarried and potentially part number changed depending on if it is compatible with your car or not. Check out this blog post above for all the details.

      Kyle@COBB

      • So if the accessport is unmarried, but for another vehicle. I can pay the 150 to have it changed for use on my vehicle.

  52. I have a accessport v3 for a evo x can i change the part number to have it work on my 2016 fiesta st?

  53. I just purchased a accessport that is married to a 08 subaru impreza mt, and am wanting to use it on my 04 forester xt at. what cost am i looking at to make it work?

  54. I bought an un-married V3 AP from a ford focus RS, to use on my 2013 Ford Fusion 2.0 ecoboost. Will I just need to pay the $150 fee, and will it need to be sent in or can that be paid and done online?

  55. Hello, I’m about to buy a Cobb Accessport WITH TCM tuning for the R35 GT-R 2014-2016 (AP3-NIS-008) however I need AP3-NIS-006. It’s been uninstalled correctly. I’m in Australia do you have local supplier that can change the licence?

  56. Hi guys, I have a Subaru WRX 2006 but I live in Australia..
The COBB AP doesn’t support the Aussie market for this model, but…
Is there a way I can use the USDM AP and somehow by way of miracle, can make it work?

  57. Hi good days, I have a COBB accessport V3 in my car and tuned by a COBB ProTuner, and he is no longer do the custom tune job, now I am going to find another to dyno tune my mazda 3 MPS but he said I need to get a licence first, what should I do if I need a retune by a different person?

    • Hey Kelvin!

If you’re simply going to a different COBB Protuner, they’ll just use their copy of Accesstuner Pro to create a custom calibration for your car. As long as it is still installed to your car, you do not need to relicense the Accessport before having the custom tune done.
      Marshall@COBB

  58. I am selling my Subaru Accessport V3 (AP3-SUB-004) and intake, if I have never opened the box, does that mean its all good to go? As in, un married. And unregistered? If not, I will be selling it at 3/4 the cost so is it worth it for someone to buy it if there is a fee? Thanks, Mike.

  59. If i need to change the part number of a V3 accessport, do I have to send it back to u? or can it be done online or some authorized locations around Toronto, Canada?

  60. Hello,
I will be buying a used access port with an “APA” serial number. How do I know if it will be compatible with my 2011 Subaru WRX?

  61. Maybe a dumb question but if I buy the correct unmarried used access port for my 2016 VW GTI. Will the tunes the previous owner paid for be accessible to me? The seller is adding the cost of the tunes in his price.

    • Hi there! While custom tune files will remain on the Accessport, they are created for a specific ECU type (we call them ROMs). The maps would only work on your GTI if both ECU IDs match exactly.

      Marshall@COBB

  62. Thanks Marshall!! in other words if the ECU is the same part number it will be able to use the ROMs saved in the Accessport. I am sold on it, even if I don’t buy this one I may have to buy a new one to avoid the hassle.

  63. I forgot to unmarry my (AP3-SUB-004) that I bought from Cobb. Am I able to upgrade it to (AP3-POR-014). If so, what’s the cost?

    • You can! There would be two components to that process. First you would need to have the unit “relicensed” so that it is in an Uninstalled state and then we can change the part number to the POR-014 for the difference in MSRP. I can have someone from our support team reach out to have the process started for you.

      Marshall@COBB

  64. AP3-SUB-003 WRX 2008 to AP3-SUB-003 2014 wrx cost? the 08 is still paired to COBB and i would just need licence as i have the software to change the key

    • Hey Austin! It sounds like you likely just need to pay the “relicense fee” in order to use that Accessport on the 2014. You can reach out to our customer service team at 1-866-922-3059 or [email protected] to get that process started.

      Marshall@COBB

  65. Hi, I currently use my cobb on my MK6 GTI, I’m planning on trading it in for a MK7 GTI, I will properly unmarry, how much would cost me?
Also I have not updated the device to the newer EPA bullsh*t! will it need to be updated or can i keep the version?

    • Hi Gabe,
Yes, if you uninstall the VLK-001 from your Mk6 GTI we can reprogram it as a VLK-002 to be compatible with a Mk7 GTI. Since there is a $30 price difference between those two units ($725 vs. $695) you would pay that difference plus the $150 part number change fee. When the part number change is applied, the Accessport will receive our current firmware and currently available OTS Maps.

      Marshall@COBB

  66. Im planning to buy a used accessport for my fiesta st, it is married to the previous owner, how much will this cost, and is there need to ship the accessport to you or the relicence is done via some file or online tool.?
Also note the device im looking at is a Mountune edition or someting like that

    Thanks!

    • Hey Arturo,

We do not have the ability to relicense Mountune devices, you would need to contact them directly for that service.

      Marshall@COBB

  67. Hey there i have purchased a accessport for a porsche macan. I would like to use it for my 2012 subaru impreza wrx sti. How much would i have to pay to get it to work? Also it’s uninstalled! Thanks!

    • Hey Jeremy, in that case you would only need to pay the $150 fee to change the part number to an AP3-SUB-003.

      Marshall@COBB

  68. I just realized when I traded my car in I set the tunes to oem or so I thought, however I didn’t realize I had to uninstall it and realize I made an expensive mistake. I had a 2017 gti dsg, am looking at getting a 2018 golf r (7 speed dsg not 6 speed like previous vw). This apparently will need sent back for relicensing, will I have to pay extra for dsg as well again like the first purchase?

    • Hey Chris! No worries, we can take care of you. Give our Customer Service team a call at 1-866-922-3059 or email [email protected]. The Accessport will not need to be shipped here to be relicensed, we can provide a unique firmware update file to get the Accessport back to an Uninstalled state and changed over to the correct part number for the Mk7.5 R. Let the rep know you chatted with us on the blog and they’ll take care of you!

      Marshall@COBB

  69. Hi.
Need to change unmarried accessport to the correct part number.
From bmw 135i n55 to ford focus st.
    Do it possible?

  70. Hey, I am planning on buying a ap3-sub-003 v3 for my 2010 Subaru FXT and the access port is still married to another car how much is it to unmarry it so i can use it on my car? Also how long does it take and what’s the process? Thank you for your time in advance.

    • Hey there! The cost to relicense an Accessport is 70% of the new price for that part number. You would simply need to contact our Customer Support Team at [email protected] or 1-866-922-3059 to get that process started. No need to ship anything to us. Once you have submitted payment we will email you a special firmware/license key to apply to that Accessport via Accessport Manager on your computer after which it will be ready to install again!
