BMW 335
History of the 335
For seven generations of BMW models, the BMW 3 series has been an icon. Introduced for the 2006 model year, the 5th generation, or e90, set a new standard in this all-around German sports car. The top of the line (non M) 3-series was the BMW 335.
The 335i came in different variants to satisfy any need. This included a four-door sedan (e90), a two-door coupe (e92), and a convertible (e93). Many non-US markets even got a wagon (e91)! No matter the number of doors you chose for your 335i, they all came with the same engine; a twin-turbocharged inline-six known as the n54 engine.
The n54 engine was BMW’s first direct-injected turbocharged engine. Instead of having the fuel injectors placed in the intake manifold runner like port injected engines, the injector is placed directly inside of the combustion chamber. This has more efficiency potential but does have some drawbacks. First, in order for fuel to flow from an injector inside a combustion chamber, it must be a high pressure fuel pump (sometimes over 3000PSI under load on the n54!). Fuel pump issues were a common fault with the early n54s. Another issue is tons of carbon build-up of the intake valves. In a traditional port-injected engine, fuel acts as a solvent as it flows over the backside of the intake valves. This helps keep them clean. But, with the injector inside of the combustion chamber, this does not occur. The BMW n54 will require routine valve cleaning maintenance typically done by walnut blasting.
From the n54, the later model e90 moved to the n55 with the exception of the 335is which retained the n54. The n55 engine was similar to the n54 with the main difference being it was a single stock turbo instead of twin turbo. The issues above were improved on the new generation inline-six. The n54 engine and the n55 engine are both capable of delivering reliable and high power performance when properly maintained.
The n54 marked the new era for the 3-series. From then to the current version, every 3-series could be had with a turbocharged powerplant. For any enthusiast, starting with a factory turbocharged platform offers more potential right out of the box. COBB saw this potential and wanted to give enthusiasts access.
Why Choose COBB for Your 335
COBB Tuning started tuning the n54 BMW tuning when it debuted in the 2007 USDM model year. The twin-turbocharged inline-six drew many comparisons to the legendary inline-six Toyota. In many circles, it was dubbed the German 2JZ. Depending on who you ask, that may be a bit of a stretch, but COBB saw the potential.
Right out of the box with only a tune both the BMW n54 and BMW n55 deliver massive gains. Throw on a few bolt-on modifications and you can make 120 horsepower and 150ft lb of torque at the wheels over stock! With that, you’re competing with the same generation m3 for a fraction of the cost.
COBB Tuning approaches design by taking the entire vehicle-platform into account as a complete system.
