History of the Volkswagen GTI

The Volkswagen Golf was a compact family car introduced in 1974.  It sold well.  It was practical. But, it left a lot to be desired for anyone that valued a car for more than just an A to B machine.  Enter the GTI variant of the VW Golf.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI founded the hot hatch segment back in 1975.  When it debuted, it was the fastest VW turbo car ever made!  Putting down 110 horsepower back in the mid-70s was pretty impressive.  Even more so in such a lightweight package.

The MK6 GTI wasn’t much more than a facelift from the MK5.  But, the MK5 was a generation that really redeemed what the GTI set out to be in the first place; THE hot hatch.  The MK6 came equipped with a 2.0l turbocharged engine and 6-speed transmission.  Also optional was Volkswagen’s silky smooth and lightning quick DSG transmission.  Throw it all together on a stiff chassis, add a four-link rear suspension, and it all combines to make the GTI once again the new benchmark for the hot hatch segment.  The benchmark rises even further with a few bolt-on MK6 GTI performance parts.

The MK7 introduced the all new MQB platform for the largest automaker in the world.  MQB stands for Modularer Querbaukasten which roughly translates to modular transverse matrix.  This new platform granted Volkswagen the ability to create components shareable over several different vehicles.  With so much overlap, there has never been a better selection of aftermarket MK7 GTI performance parts.  Like the previous generation MK6, the MK75 GTI also sports a 2.0L turbo with choice of manual 6-speed or dual-clutch (DSG) automatic transmission.  Both systems are ripe for tuning with the COBB Accessport.

The GTI has won nearly every automotive accolade available.  In 2015, it won Motor Trend’s Car of The Year Award.  Now in its soon to be 8th generation, the Volkswagen GTI  has been the gold standard for hot hatches.  It created an entire segment in the auto industry; an affordable performance-oriented vehicle.  Without the GTI paving the way, many of our favorite cars may have never been made.
