Nissan GT-R
History of the Nissan GT-R
Nissan has had lots of success with a turbocharged 6 cylinder and all wheel drive combination. The R35 GT-R is the latest of a long list.
The Nissan GT-R name is derived from one of the most iconic Nissan models of all time; the Skyline GT-R. The Skyline came in several variants but the GT-R turned things up to 11. The most recent generations of the Skyline used the RB inline six platform with twin turbos. These cars are legendary with enthusiasts and supported with tons of GT-R aftermarket parts and options. Nissan issued a massive overhaul of the platform with the R35 GT-R. This overhaul brought an entirely new engine layout, chassis, and DCT equipped drivetrain. One critical change to most of us was that the car would be available in the American market.
The GT-R was introduced in 2007 and made it to the US market the next year for the 2009 model year. All GT-Rs are equipped with the VR38GETT engine, which is a 3.8L twin turbo v6, a dual clutch transmission and all wheel drive . The GT-R outperformed many other vehicles in the supercar range for a fraction of the price.
COBB's History with GT-R Tuning
Even prior to its introduction, there was talk about the GT-R being uncrackable; that car tuning would not be possible. With that in mind, COBB actually imported a JDM GT-R to get a head start on the USDM release which would follow. Within a short year’s time, COBB had completed extensive reverse engineering and testing efforts and had an Accessport with off the shelf maps in deep stages of development.
From there, COBB has routinely released significant additions like 12 injector capability, rolling anti-lag, and custom traction control. The Accessport and Accesstuner software offer all the custom features you need for anything you want to achieve with your GT-R.
COBB Tuning approaches design by taking the entire vehicle-platform into account as a complete system. Our ultra high-quality products and services are professionally engineered, thoroughly tested and backed by industry leading customer service to ensure that they meet our objectives and exceed customer expectations.
We are a one-stop firm with an enviable set of qualified skills and the exceptional ability to design, engineer, manufacture, test and service our own products under one roof. Whether it’s our state-of-the-art Accessport ECU programmer, our exceptional bolt-on GT-R performance parts, COBB has the tuning experience, skill and attitude to meet your Nissan’s specific needs.
Nissan GT-R Stage Packages
Stage Packages
Our engineers rigorously test Hard Parts to find the right order and combination for the best incremental power gains. Maps are then created and tested to tune the ECU so that it supports and takes advantage of each part. With these tuning results, COBB is able to create the optimal Upgrade Path of Staged Packages that have all the necessary parts to upgrade your GT-R. You can start with Stage 1 or immediately get everything and go straight to Stage 3! Learn more about The COBB Way.

Nissan GT-R Flex-Fuel
Flex Fuel for Nissan GT-R
Our Flex Fuel solutions for the Nissan GT-R are built around our innovative CAN Gateway system. The CAN Gateway Flex Fuel Kit for the GT-R includes an ethanol content sensor and integrates seamlessly with the vehicle’s advanced electronics, enabling it to run efficiently on various ethanol blends, including E85. This kit works in conjunction with our Accessport tuning device, allowing real-time monitoring and adjustment of fuel and ignition parameters to optimize performance based on ethanol content.
Nissan GT-R Intakes
Intakes
The COBB Big SF intake system works from stock to big power builds. In stock form, the R35 ECU measures airflow using a Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor located in the stock intake system. As modifications add up and increase power, the airflow can increase to the point that it exceeds the MAF sensor’s maximum capacity, preventing the ECU from accurately measuring air mass, and thus unable to deliver the appropriate amount of fuel. The Big SF Intake increases the inner diameter of the intake tubing, increasing the cross section of the intake and allowing the MAF sensor to read lower for the same amount of ingested air. This gives the sensor the necessary headroom to read accurately for airflow higher than the stock system was designed for. COBB Tuning has used the this intake to support builds of over 600HP and 600TQ at the wheels, gains of 40% over a stock GT-R! And, it’s available in Aluminum with a wrinkle black finish or carbon fiber!
Nissan LF BPV
Turbo
The COBB LF BPV is a compact and lightweight by-pass valve that is capable of holding very high boost pressure without leaking. Its updated design reduces control volume by 30% allowing for extremely fast venting of boost when actuated. Innovative engineering and precision manufacturing result in a compact package able to fit in the confines of a tight engine bay. Due to the low weight of the components, the moving parts in the LF BPV have less inertia and can respond faster than heavier components in other bypass valves. This updated design uses a Banjo-fitting vacuum port which provides 360 degree adjustability of hose routing. This results in a simpler install and less potential leak points than the NPT ports. This new design also includes a piston o-ring seal that is twice the diameter of the old design allowing more seal compression and reduced wear. Adjustability of the spring seat is no longer needed due to the updated spring and seal design which provides a 60% increase in clamping force at peak boost while maintaining similar operation at idle and transient loads.

Fuel System
If you’re adding power modifications to your Nissan GT-R you’ll quickly find the limit of the stock injectors. In fact, with only the intake and y-pipe exhaust installed, the injectors are nearing their limits. This is why COBB offers upgraded fuel injectors, upgraded fuel pumps, flex fuel upgrades, and all the necessary control systems you’ll need for your Nissan GT-R.
